Bright red cherry, sweet tobacco, mint and rose petal notes give the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Panek Vineyard a level of brilliance that sets it apart from most other Cabernets being made off this site. Plush, elegant and sensual to its core, the 2016 is a winner from Pulido-Walker and winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown. (AG) (12/2018)

The 2016 growing season benefited tremendously from the return of significant winter rainfall across the Napa Valley. Whereas the challenging 2015 season produced smaller yields of high-quality fruit, 2016 was more in keeping with the textbook vintages of 2012 and 2014, with a longer and milder growing season. As a result, the 2016 Pulido~Walker Panek Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon tells a story all about site and varietal. With less stress on the vines thanks to rain, extended hang time, and no weather drama, the wine speaks unmistakably of this particular place.

We harvest from five different blocks in this vineyard. In past years, there have been standout lots of wine associated with individual blocks and clones, but 2016 has changed all that. The combination of vine maturity and new farming efforts brought all five into the limelight in 2016. While the final clonal blend remains the same this vintage, clones 4 and 337 will play their own starring roles in coming vintages.

Winemaking & Tasting Notes
The 2016 Panek Vineyard Cabernet shows a good mix of acidity and tannins, a welcome counterpoint to the generous fruit profile we’ve come to expect from this valley floor locale. The wine is darker, with more black-fruit qualities balancing the caramelized sugar aspects of red fruit. The relationship of the two is as ideal as we’ve anticipated it could be, marrying round tannins and excellent acidity. The Tempest was the first proprietary wine Realm released, so named for the “perfect” storm of three grape varietals that became available at the same time, from the same vineyard, in 2002 -- the year of our tumultuous beginning. Though our equipment was borrowed and the winery we occupied unfinished, our grapes were sound that year – beautiful in fact – and the resulting wine reflected a fierce determination to brave the storm. The Tempest is still made with beautiful grapes, from vineyards such as Beckstoffer Orchard and Dr. Crane, as well as Blair Vineyard in Calistoga. Predominantly Merlot, with lesser amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot depending on vintage, The Tempest is a roiling cauldron of lush, bright, red fruit – a wine that shows what Merlot can be in the right hands, from the right vineyards.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0242/0683/products/mywineplus.com-Realm-2017-THE-TEMPEST-Napa-Valley-Bordeaux-Blend_22443621-def2-410a-b463-3803765f9c44.png?v=1634061833
quivet-cellars-2017-kenefick-ranch-vineyard-cabernet-sauvignon
Quivet Cellars 2017 Kenefick Ranch Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

95 pts Jeb Dunnuck - Year in and year out, our Kenefick Ranch Cabernet is bold, layered and embraces new world style Napa Valley Cabernet while retaining that ‘Mike Smith’ purity and freshness. Dark ruby in color, full in body and a nose of plum, big blue fruits, lavender and baking spices. Sun-warmed herbs accompany sand, lavender and raspberry on the nose. It has good aromatic freshness and definition, and the full-bodied palate is also clean, super-fresh and lively. It's dense and ripe, defined by serrated tannins, keen acidity and a mouth-coating character. It comes from the Combe, Patou, La Côte, Les Mazards and Chaillot lieux-dits and is partially destemmed and brought up mostly in neutral barrels. Lifted notes of black and blue fruits, damp earth, spring flowers, and violets all emerge from this full-bodied, concentrated yet elegant red that stays balanced on the palate, with good acidity. At bottling the wine reminded me of a cross between the 2013 and 2016. A blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Cabernet Franc, and 7% Petit Verdot was co-fermented in open top puncheons then pressed to 100% new oak. Intensive winter rains brought widespread flooding that signaled, in no uncertain terms, the end of Northern California’s drought. Summer began with a pair of heat spikes in June and culminated in a brutal Labor Day heat wave, during which daytime temperatures soared as high as 120 degrees. But the most dramatic events of 2017 began overnight on October 8, quickly raging into a complex of wildfires that burned thousands of acres and hundreds of homes, including the Pulido-Walker Estate residence.

As devastating as these fires were, they had no impact on the 2017 Pulido-Walker Cabernet Sauvignon. Harvest and crush were completed before the blaze ignited, and we are thankful that our production and storage facilities were untouched. It was the extreme September heat that posed a greater challenge, with fruit still on the vine.

The growing season in the Panek Vineyard was uneventful, with the fruit setting up beautifully. As the September heat wave set in, it was crucial to water the vines deeply and let the moister canopy protect the clusters. The afternoon shade at this site provided further protection when temperatures soared. Soon after the heat spell broke, brix began dropping to normal levels. We let the fruit hang to further ripen, and picked a week later than normal.

Winemaking & Tasting Notes

Yield was smaller than average in 2017 throughout the Valley, and the Panek Vineyard was no exception. By mid-February the rains had returned; nearly doubling the total rainfall and staving off early budbreak. The much-needed rains continued through March resulting in budbreak for the larger part of Westside Road by month-end. The remainder of the spring saw additional rainfall with spates of warm weather interspersed. The plants responded well under these near-perfect vegetative cycle conditions. Flowering commenced in June under ideal temperatures. Subsequently, below-average temperatures ensued for a week and a half which extended the bloom schedule. The net effect of the cooling trend created a looser cluster and some millerandage or “hens and chicks,” a highly desirable trait for many reasons including better phenolic development and better air flow through the cluster to prevent mold. Heading into the season, crop loads were near-historic averages with great vine balance. Harvest started on the 16th of August under ideal conditions with moderate, consistent temperatures. Over 60 inches of rain fell in some areas of Napa Valley, but our key vineyard properties were left with perfectly saturated soils. Bloom began slightly earlier than expected, but a mild spring resulted in nice fruit set. Then, mid-season weather conditions began to shift. A significant heat wave that lasted through Labor Day capped early summer heat spells. This was the first defining moment of the season. While high temperatures slowed down ripening and threatened to shut down the vines, our vineyard practices and season-long decisions paid off. In short order, cooler temperatures returned, and the vines continued to ripen at a more normal and steadier pace. Cabernet Franc was the last of the season’s fruit to be picked from Soda Canyon Ranch. We saw modest sugar levels, bright acidity and striking density in aromatics and were also very pleased with the structure in the resulting wines.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0242/0683/products/mywineplus.com-Silver-Oak-2017-Napa-Valley-Cabernet-Sauvignon-1.5l-magnum.jpg?v=1644454466
michele-satta-2016-marianova-bolgheri-superiore-tuscany-italy
Michele Satta 2016 Marianova Bolgheri Superiore Tuscany Italy

96 Points Decanter - Satta is one of the very few in Bolgheri to grow Sangiovese, and this is the second vintage of an equal-parts Sangiovese-Syrah blend which repays his faith in the variety. Complex fruit and herb aromas and a tangy intensity on the palate, very firm structure, with an intriguing aromatic finish.

95 Points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - On first nose, the 2016 Bolgheri Superiore Marianova (equal parts Syrah and Sangiovese) shows savory and barbecue-like aromas with teriyaki sauce and hickory smoke followed by plummy fruit and blackberry preserves. There is a note of sweetness with lots of spice, leather and tobacco at the edges. Of Michele Satta's releases, this wine is the most unlike him in that it is the most contemporary and enriched. This is the second vintage of Marianova (the winery’s latest creation) to be released.

95 Points James Suckling - Aromas of currants, crushed berries and walnuts, as well as chocolate. Full body, juicy tannins and beautiful fruit at the end. Big wine that needs time to soften. A blend of sangiovese and syrah. Better after 2021.

Winemaker Notes - Marianova was born as the first experience of the second generation Satta, a blend in equal parts of the best Syrah and Sangiovese grapes. In the Vignanova vineyard the grapes that have most marked my experience in Bolgheri are picked, assembling an unprecedented blend for this area: Marianova is the first Bolgheri Superiore that does not have any Bordeaux grapes in the blend. Through Syrah and Sangiovese they express all the brightness and harmony of this Mediterranean place, which can give wines of very rare depth and complexity, avoiding to rely on concentration and stratification.

Blend: 50% Syrah, 50% Sangiovese

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0242/0683/products/mywineplus.com-Michele-Satta-2016-Marianova-Bolgheri-Superiore-Tuscany-Italy.jpg?v=1634255752
