91 pts. Wine Spectator - "Rich and well-structured, with floral currant and crushed stone aromas and supple, complex flavors of black cherry, dried herb and spice. Drink now through 2025."
91 Points Connoisseur Guide - "From its concentrated aromas of black cherries and creamy oak to its intense flavors, this inviting effort impresses with its richness and its fine fruity presence, and, at every stop, it shows the succulence unique to classic Merlot. It is full and supple yet never steers to softness and sports plenty of vitality and terrific palatal length, and, although a fairly big wine, it shows a careful winemaking hand. Those who can resist its immediate charms and leave it alone for another five of six years will be rewarded with a many-layered Merlot that successfully combines ripeness and grace as few do."
This might be the best Merlot Coho has produced yet to date. A blend of 88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from the great Michael Black vineyard in Coombsville. On the nose this wine shows of its great character immediately. One is greeted by lush black and red currants, hints of coffee and a touch of anise. The palate of this multi-layered wine is amazingly polished and well-balanced. Gobs of black currant and chocolate coat this intense sultry body, leading into a very complex and long fish. This incredible undertaking will turn lots of heads! As always very limited!
A beautiful new Napa Valley Merlot from one of our favorite small producers. Get this small-production gem while our allocations lasts.
Coho Winery is the shared aspiration of Brooks Painter and Gary Lipp to produce flavorful, balanced wines. The Coho 2010 Michael Black Vineyard Merlot offers up rich cassis, dusty berry and black cherry aromas, with warm and exotic floral scents of dried rose petals and hibiscus flowers. Enticing cedary-spice notes with vanillin and hints of black olive lead to a very concentrated, black cherry and berry flavor in the mouth. The supple tannins and complex layers of richness unwind slowly as ripe, black fruit flavors burst across the palate. The textural impression is very sensual and succulent, and the intensity builds in a powerful finish of fruit purity and mineral nuances. Highly Recommended.
Napa native Michael Black has been a respected viticultralist and vineyard engineer for over 40 years.
His resume includes planting many high profile vineyards in both Napa Valley and Sonoma County. In 1987 Michael decided to plant a vineyard on the rocky hillside surrounding his house. Located in Coombsville, the vineyard benefits from the two defining characteristics of the region: cool, marine influenced air and volcanic, well-drained soils. To give the vineyard a personal touch, Michael propagated his own Merlot clone that he named the “Black” Clone. The desired characteristics were small berries set in small clusters, all the better to concentrate the structure and complexity of the fruit.
In 2004 COHO was privileged to become associated with the Michael Black Vineyard and began to purchase the entire output. The wines reveal a richness and depth of flavor that is most often associated with the Merlot based wines from the Pomerol region of Bordeaux. Our fans often say “this is a Cabernet lovers Merlot”.
