The original vineyard of 300 acres was the first to achieve critical acclaim for Carneros wines when it garnered medals from viticultural fairs sponsored in 1888. Louis M. Martini first purchased Carneros grapes in the 1930s from the Stanly Ranch, a part of which had miraculously survived the phylloxera infestation of the 1880s. In 1942, Martini purchased 200 acres of the Stanly Ranch and six years later he began Pinot Noir & Chardonnay clonal experimentation.

COHO has been making a Stanly Ranch Pinot Noir since our first vintage in 2002. We have been fortunate to purchase the oldest existing section of the vineyard that was planted around 1970. The Pinot Noir clone of this section, originally from Pommard in Burgundy, is named for Louis Martini who identified it during his years of field work as most suitable for the Carneros soils. As this portion of vineyard is going into decline because of age, we began in 2008 incorporating other sections that are planted with Dijon clones.

The vineyard sits just above the tidal marshes that flow into San Pablo Bay (which sits above the San Francisco Bay). Most afternoons during the growing season the warm to hot temperatures farther north in the Napa Valley act like a magnet drawing the cool breezes and fog from the bay. These cooling temperatures will began to bring relief to the vines in the afternoon and often not roll out until mid-morning the next day. This cooling blanket creates an ideal environment for the Stanly Ranch Pinot Noir to develop the spicy aromatics and complex black cherry.

Stanly Ranch is the eastern most vineyard in the Los Carneros appellation. Proximity to the cool foggy marine climate of the bay imparts spicy aromatics in the wine, while the clay and clay loam soils contribute an earthy complexity to the black cherry fruit flavors.

Varietal Composition: 100% Pinot Noir

Appellation: Los Carneros, Napa Valley

Vines: Dijon Clones 115, 667, 777 on 101-14 rootstock

Pre-fermentation: 4 days cold soak at 55 degrees F.

Fermentation: Romanee-Conti yeast selection

Pressing: 11 days after crush

Aging: 10 months in 100% French oak barrels, 40% new

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0242/0683/products/mywineplus.com-Coho-2014-Stanly-Ranch-Carneros-Pinot-Noir.png?v=1633749726
vine-cliff-2013-private-stock-16-rows-oakville-napa-valley-cabernet-sauvignon
Vine Cliff 2013 Private Stock 16 Rows Oakville Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

93 pts International Wine Report - This small production Cabernet Sauvignon is made with fruit from the first sixteen rows of vines planted in front of the Sweeney family’s hilltop home, this bottling represents the oldest and most mature fruit from their Oakville Estate. Bright red cherry, sweet tobacco, mint and rose petal notes give the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Panek Vineyard a level of brilliance that sets it apart from most other Cabernets being made off this site. Plush, elegant and sensual to its core, the 2016 is a winner from Pulido-Walker and winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown. (AG) (12/2018)

The 2016 growing season benefited tremendously from the return of significant winter rainfall across the Napa Valley. Whereas the challenging 2015 season produced smaller yields of high-quality fruit, 2016 was more in keeping with the textbook vintages of 2012 and 2014, with a longer and milder growing season. As a result, the 2016 Pulido~Walker Panek Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon tells a story all about site and varietal. With less stress on the vines thanks to rain, extended hang time, and no weather drama, the wine speaks unmistakably of this particular place.

We harvest from five different blocks in this vineyard. At bottling the wine reminded me of a cross between the 2013 and 2016. A blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Cabernet Franc, and 7% Petit Verdot was co-fermented in open top puncheons then pressed to 100% new oak. The lead aromas of black currant, crushed minerals, black cherry and hints of rose hips are followed on the palate with flavors of black currant, soy, hints of roasted plums and beef blood. Intensive winter rains brought widespread flooding that signaled, in no uncertain terms, the end of Northern California’s drought. Summer began with a pair of heat spikes in June and culminated in a brutal Labor Day heat wave, during which daytime temperatures soared as high as 120 degrees. But the most dramatic events of 2017 began overnight on October 8, quickly raging into a complex of wildfires that burned thousands of acres and hundreds of homes, including the Pulido-Walker Estate residence.

As devastating as these fires were, they had no impact on the 2017 Pulido-Walker Cabernet Sauvignon. Harvest and crush were completed before the blaze ignited, and we are thankful that our production and storage facilities were untouched. It was the extreme September heat that posed a greater challenge, with fruit still on the vine.

The growing season in the Panek Vineyard was uneventful, with the fruit setting up beautifully. As the September heat wave set in, it was crucial to water the vines deeply and let the moister canopy protect the clusters. The afternoon shade at this site provided further protection when temperatures soared. Soon after the heat spell broke, brix began dropping to normal levels. We let the fruit hang to further ripen, and picked a week later than normal.

Winemaking & Tasting Notes

Yield was smaller than average in 2017 throughout the Valley, and the Panek Vineyard was no exception. While quantity was down, quality of all five clones planted to this site continues to impress. We saw superb maturation across the board, with clone 337 coming into its own and clone 6 putting on its best showing ever. The 2017 Pulido-Walker Panek Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is blended from the three clones we have traditionally used, along with clone 337, to bring you a wine of excellent quality from a vineyard where quality has become consistently high.

This vintage is balanced and light on its feet, with fresh fruit characteristics. Somewhat more red fruited than is typical even for this site, the wine is a refreshing one to drink now. We have seen fleshier vintages certainly, and much as we anticipate the ways those wines will develop with age, we greatly appreciate the 2017 Panek Cabernet Sauvignon for giving us something delicious to uncork right away.

Although yield declined by about a third, the shatter we saw during spring bloom paved the way for a big bump in quality and flavor concentration as the remaining fruit matured. “A naturally small crop has a huge effect on quality,” winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown explains. “We can’t duplicate that by dropping fruit.” Berries in the Melanson Vineyard hung longer and in looser clusters for the remainder of the 2015 season, ultimately making the Pulido~Walker Cabernet Sauvignon from this site a better wine.

Winemaking & Tasting Notes
The concentration of this vintage means the wine comes across as more fruit driven than in past years, although the savory notes and dried-herb quality we associate particularly with Clone 7 are still readily apparent. By mid-February the rains had returned; nearly doubling the total rainfall and staving off early budbreak. The much-needed rains continued through March resulting in budbreak for the larger part of Westside Road by month-end. The remainder of the spring saw additional rainfall with spates of warm weather interspersed. The plants responded well under these near-perfect vegetative cycle conditions. Flowering commenced in June under ideal temperatures. Subsequently, below-average temperatures ensued for a week and a half which extended the bloom schedule. The net effect of the cooling trend created a looser cluster and some millerandage or “hens and chicks,” a highly desirable trait for many reasons including better phenolic development and better air flow through the cluster to prevent mold. Heading into the season, crop loads were near-historic averages with great vine balance. Harvest started on the 16th of August under ideal conditions with moderate, consistent temperatures. Over 60 inches of rain fell in some areas of Napa Valley, but our key vineyard properties were left with perfectly saturated soils. Bloom began slightly earlier than expected, but a mild spring resulted in nice fruit set. Then, mid-season weather conditions began to shift. A significant heat wave that lasted through Labor Day capped early summer heat spells. This was the first defining moment of the season. While high temperatures slowed down ripening and threatened to shut down the vines, our vineyard practices and season-long decisions paid off. In short order, cooler temperatures returned, and the vines continued to ripen at a more normal and steadier pace. Cabernet Franc was the last of the season’s fruit to be picked from Soda Canyon Ranch. We saw modest sugar levels, bright acidity and striking density in aromatics and were also very pleased with the structure in the resulting wines.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0242/0683/products/mywineplus.com-Silver-Oak-2017-Napa-Valley-Cabernet-Sauvignon-1.5l-magnum.jpg?v=1644454466
kongsgaard-2018-napa-valley-cabernet-sauvignon
KONGSGAARD 2018 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

95 Points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - A barrel sample, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon features a deep garnet-purple, singing on the nose of freshly crushed black cherries, black berry pie and warm plums over a core of cassis and pencil lead plus nuances of violets, cinnamon stick and underbrush. Colder weather during flowering led to lower fruit set, which, along with minimal rainfall throughout the previous three years, resulted in small yields. In late summer, several heat spells nudged temperatures above 100 degrees. These incidences were particularly challenging during August and September, and so the vines needed to use all available resources to maintain a regular ripening path. Harvest began very early—September 8th—but the cool climate of the territory tempered trajectories, allowing us to continue harvesting for four weeks. Nearly fifty-four harvest passes were completed, resulting in forty distinct vinifications.
