Bordeaux is, therefore, a popular tourist and wine destination. Paris is the only French city that attracts more visitors each year than Bordeaux! There are about 7,375 separate chateaux in Bordeaux today, producing nearly 900 million bottles of wine per vintage!

Château Lafite-Rothschild, Château Latour, Château Mouton-Rothschild, Château Margaux, and Château Haut-Brion from the Médoc sub-region; Château Cheval Blanc and Château Ausone from Saint-Émilion; and Château Pétrus and Château Le Pin from Pomerol are all famous Bordeaux wines. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and occasionally Cabernet Franc are used to make the red wines. Bordeaux produces both dry and sweet white wines, including Château d'Yquem, one of the world's most famous sweet wines from the Sauternes appellation.

The Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855 arose from Emperor Napoleon III's request for a classification system for France's greatest Bordeaux wines, which were to be on exhibit for visitors from all over the world at the Exposition Universelle de Paris.
