Virginie Boone, Wine Enthusiast 90 pts - Pungent earth and a tease of potato skin add to a perfumed nose of brambly blackberry and strawberry, surrounded by big, grippy tannin. Full bodied, it develops further flavors of vanilla, cinnamon and dried herb.
The 2014 Russian River Valley Zinfandel is a blend of old vine Zinfandel and touch of Petite Sirah from the orange, iron-rich soil of Ponzo Vineyard. The Zinfandel on its own is fruity and jammy and Petite Sirah brings in complementary dark fruit flavors and denisty, resulting in a blend that is full-bodied and well-structured.
The aroma of this Zinfandel bursts from the glass with mixed berry cobbler baked with brown sugar and laced with sweet cinnamon spice. The flavors are intense and concentrated with ripe red plums and strawberry jam. The finish is long and memorable, leaving hints of toasted bread, vanilla and cinnamon flavors on the palate. This is a generous wine exemplifying the best of California Zinfandel in a warm vintage.
