97 Points! Wow. The 2013 Ilatraia jumps right out at you. This is a tremendous effort - I tasted this wine three times blind and it always came out on top. Cabernet Sauvignon (40%) is blended with Petit Verdot (40%) and Cabernet Franc (20%). The complexity and the ever-changing nature of the bouquet is mind-bending. Ilatraia shows enormous depth and sophistication, and it leaves a profound impact. The wine sports deep color saturation with brilliant flashes of dark ruby. The texture is immensely soft, yielding and seamless in its integration. Dark fruit and blackberry is followed by light notes of tobacco, toasted nut and scorched earth. I am in awe of its complexity. - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

94 Points! Aromas of licorice with blackberries and hints of graphite. Full and juicy with chewy tannins. Very polished. Needs at least three years to open. A wine with classy structure. - James Suckling, jamessuckling.com

93 Points! The 2013 Ilatraia is Brancaia's Bordeaux blend from estate vineyards in Bolgheri. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, espresso and grilled herbs give the Ilatraia its distinctive richness and resonance. There is plenty of Maremma warmth and radiance here. I would prefer to drink this racy, fruit-driven Tuscan red over the next handful of years. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

History

In 1981, a Swiss couple, Brigitte and Bruno Widmer fell in love with the at the time abandoned Brancaia estate (Castellina in Chianti) and purchased it. Only two years later, Brancaia made the first rank in an important Chianti Classico tasting and then rapidly gained international recognition. This lead to a continuous extension of the activities resulting in purchasing the Poppi estate (Radda in Chianti) in 1989, followed in 1998 by the founding of Brancaia in Maremma, only 10km from the Mediterranean coastline.

Since 1998 Barbara Widmer, oenologist and daughter of the founders, has been responsible for the winemaking as well as for the vineyards on all three estates - she thereby relies on the consultancy of the famous oenologist Carlo Ferrini.

From 2002 and 2014 Martin Kronenberg supported Barbara in the direction of the estates while being responsible for marketing and worldwide distribution.

Today BRANCAIA is one of Tuscany’s leading wineries, receiving important national and international awards every year. The wines are successfully sold worldwide.
