It doesn't quite have the depth of the other wines here, but it has a lively, pure texture and excels on its balance and harmony. Already hard to resist, plan on drinking this over the coming 3-5 years. This was another stacked lineup by the team of Dan Kosta and Michael Browne. All of these wines showed the more approachable style of the 2012 vintage, and had seamless, elegant characters. They're beautiful now, but I suspect they will evolve nicely given their overall balance. The vineyard location is near the edge of the Petaluma Wind Gap known as the Sebastopol Hills, which is a microclimate characterized by morning and evening fog, breezy afternoons and bright, but mild afternoon sun. The cooler temperatures allow for an extended hang time and produce grapes of uncommon intensity and complexity. The Kanzler Vineyard is usually the last Pinot Noir vineyard we harvest. The gently sloping vineyard is a former apple orchard near the town of Sebastopol. Consisting of clones 115, 667 and Pommard, this vineyard delivers complexity, strength and purity, along with wines exhibiting a sensuous mouth feel. Our first vintage of Kanzler Vineyard was in 2002 and the vineyard has proven to be unique and extremely consistent.

Aromatics:

Richly concentrated blackberry and raspberry fruit accented by violets. To hold the estate to its own high standards, after the more elegant and complete 2014, the 2015 vintage of Quilceda's flagship bottling feels a bit more overtly high-octane and marked by its time in new wood, and I don't think it will ever be as graceful. The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Onda, which sees 19 months in about 54% new French oak, has turned out much more compelling than I thought last year. All the winter rains came in February and March, providing relief from the minimal rains of 2013 and recharging the soils just before the vines came out of their dormant period. Warm weather caused the vines to emerge from dormancy early, with bud break in late March. The summer weather was mild with few heat spikes above 100°F and warm nights. This translated to grapes that retained tannins because of the mild daytime temperatures, but lower than average acid levels due to the warmer nights. The early bud break and even summer weather aligned for an early and bountiful harvest. We saw our largest crop to date. Berry size was similar to 2012, but we saw more berries per cluster. As a result, our 2014 wines are structured, yet approachable, with lower acidity than the 2013 vintage. The fruit quality was excellent, producing wines with intensity, alluring aromatics, and classic fruit character.

Harvest and Aging: Our Crystal Springs vineyard is typically the backbone of this blend. It was harvested over 4 days in early September. Lotus was picked next on September 23rd follow the next day by our earliest block at Hershey. Helms followed on October 10th and 11th. The final pick at Hershey occurred on October 14th . The blend was fermented in almost equal parts upright oak and concrete tanks. The remaining 10% was fermented in 225L French oak barrels. The wines were pressed directly to barrel, and malolactic was native.

Tasting Notes: Fresh blackberries and raspberries, layered with dark chocolate, and baking spice. The palate opens with rich warm fruit notes that are interwoven with precise tannins. Sourced primarily from hillside vineyards the wine is structured and full bodied, but with an elegant balance of tannin and a creamy density. Flavors of ripe black cherries, chocolate, espresso. Hints of minerality and nutmeg spice emerge on a long lingering finish. While inviting now, this wine will grow in complexity as flavors marry with time. A rush of dark red and purplish stone fruit, mint, new leather, spice and blood orange give the 2015 a very decidedly exotic character that is impossible to miss. Raspberry jam, mocha, new leather and expressive floral notes appear with time in the glass, rounding things out nicely. Even though the 2015 is quite forward and open at this stage, the wine has plenty of stuffing as well as the underlying structure to support many years of exceptional drinking. This is a stellar showing for Lynch-Bages. The nose is closed right now, and the tannins lend a certain austerity. After a few minutes, the loganberry and blackberry notes come through, along with liquorice and fresh mint leaf. Although the tannins remain insistent, the light begins to filter in. This is an excellent Lynch-Bages which displays the solid masculine frame that has become more apparent over the past few years. Notes of ripe blackcurrants, caramelized cherries, tobacco leaf and a kiss of lead pencil all emerge from this textbook Pauillac that has medium to full-bodied richness, notable concentration, and building structure. Made from 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that saw 75% new barrels, it needs 5-7 years of cellaring and will be one of the longer-lived wines from the Médoc. 94+ (11/2017)

94 points Wine Spectator - This has an ample core of plum, fig and blackberry compote flavors, underlined liberally with graphite and smoldering tobacco notes. Bright red cherry, sweet tobacco, mint and rose petal notes give the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Panek Vineyard a level of brilliance that sets it apart from most other Cabernets being made off this site. Plush, elegant and sensual to its core, the 2016 is a winner from Pulido-Walker and winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown. (AG) (12/2018)

The 2016 growing season benefited tremendously from the return of significant winter rainfall across the Napa Valley. Whereas the challenging 2015 season produced smaller yields of high-quality fruit, 2016 was more in keeping with the textbook vintages of 2012 and 2014, with a longer and milder growing season. As a result, the 2016 Pulido~Walker Panek Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon tells a story all about site and varietal. With less stress on the vines thanks to rain, extended hang time, and no weather drama, the wine speaks unmistakably of this particular place.

We harvest from five different blocks in this vineyard. In past years, there have been standout lots of wine associated with individual blocks and clones, but 2016 has changed all that. The combination of vine maturity and new farming efforts brought all five into the limelight in 2016. While the final clonal blend remains the same this vintage, clones 4 and 337 will play their own starring roles in coming vintages.

Winemaking & Tasting Notes
The 2016 Panek Vineyard Cabernet shows a good mix of acidity and tannins, a welcome counterpoint to the generous fruit profile we’ve come to expect from this valley floor locale. The wine is darker, with more black-fruit qualities balancing the caramelized sugar aspects of red fruit. The relationship of the two is as ideal as we’ve anticipated it could be, marrying round tannins and excellent acidity. At bottling the wine reminded me of a cross between the 2013 and 2016. Intensive winter rains brought widespread flooding that signaled, in no uncertain terms, the end of Northern California’s drought. Summer began with a pair of heat spikes in June and culminated in a brutal Labor Day heat wave, during which daytime temperatures soared as high as 120 degrees. But the most dramatic events of 2017 began overnight on October 8, quickly raging into a complex of wildfires that burned thousands of acres and hundreds of homes, including the Pulido-Walker Estate residence.

As devastating as these fires were, they had no impact on the 2017 Pulido-Walker Cabernet Sauvignon. Harvest and crush were completed before the blaze ignited, and we are thankful that our production and storage facilities were untouched. It was the extreme September heat that posed a greater challenge, with fruit still on the vine.

The growing season in the Panek Vineyard was uneventful, with the fruit setting up beautifully. As the September heat wave set in, it was crucial to water the vines deeply and let the moister canopy protect the clusters. The afternoon shade at this site provided further protection when temperatures soared. Soon after the heat spell broke, brix began dropping to normal levels. We let the fruit hang to further ripen, and picked a week later than normal.

Winemaking & Tasting Notes

Yield was smaller than average in 2017 throughout the Valley, and the Panek Vineyard was no exception. While quantity was down, quality of all five clones planted to this site continues to impress. We saw superb maturation across the board, with clone 337 coming into its own and clone 6 putting on its best showing ever. The 2017 Pulido-Walker Panek Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is blended from the three clones we have traditionally used, along with clone 337, to bring you a wine of excellent quality from a vineyard where quality has become consistently high.

This vintage is balanced and light on its feet, with fresh fruit characteristics. Somewhat more red fruited than is typical even for this site, the wine is a refreshing one to drink now.
