Donaire 2011 Gran Reserva Malbec, Argentina
The 2011 Donaire Gran Reserva Malbec is very representative of the house style, beautiful fruit, medium-fuller to fuller bodied in style, almost voluptuous in texture, yet still maintaining a modicum of elegance, with good structure and finer tuned, sleek tannins. Offering a nice combo of florals and ripe blackberry and dark cherry fruit on the nose there is light oak spice and licorice element to the aromatics as well. As the wine opens and warms up it goes from medium fuller to fuller bodied, offering suppleness to the mouth filling darker red fruit flavors. The tannins are almost silky, yet have enough grip to focus the fruit to give a little backend firmness to the dry finish. Good acidity adds freshness and vibrancy with a nice lingering note of sweet berry fruit and licorice on the persistent finish. All said and done, this has richness, balance and although it showcases mouth filling fruit flavors, there is a sense of refinement and elegance to the total package.
