The 2013 Pinot Noir Keefer Ranch Vineyard comes from a 20-acre site in the Russian River Valley, acquired by this team two years ago. Harvest between September 20th and October 7th, completely destemmed and aged 16 months in 55% new French oak, it has awesome richness and freshness in its cassis, black raspberry, crushed rock and subtle vanilla bean/sweet oak bouquet. This gives way to a rich, layered, elegant red that has the balance and class to evolve nicely for a decade. (JD) (10/2015)

This particular site is highly regarded for very good reasons, and it has been responsible for noteworthy Pinots from a number of different makers, but this latest from Kosta Browne ranks among the richest examples that we have encountered to date. It makes no apologies for its ripeness and exhibits enormous depth despite being somewhat obvious right now, but beneath its youthful succulence, it shows layers of rich oak, dark cherries, raspberries, vanilla and hints of savory spice and a great sense of drive. A juicy, exuberant wine, the 2013 Pinot Noir Keefer Ranch is all about textbook Russian River exuberance and voluptuousness. This is the first vintage in which the clonal blend incorporates dollops of Calera and Swan, which seem to add layers and textures to the forward, bold fruit. Keefer Ranch is located in the Green Valley appellation in the southwestern corner of the Russian River Valley. The 30 acre vineyard is located on gently rolling hills in an area known to have some of the coolest weather in the Russian River Valley. Morning and evening fog, gentle afternoon breezes, cool overnight temperatures and the warm afternoon sun produce grapes with terrific natural acidity combined with a combination of elegance and intensity. Marcy Keefer grows some of the best Pinot Noir grapes in Sonoma County and we are proud to have them as members of the family. The site has a superb micro-climate, offering just the right amount of warmth during the day and very cool nights, which leads to intensely focused red fruited wine with strong natural acidity. In 2013, Kosta Browne made its first vineyard purchase, acquiring Keefer’s 20 acre K2 block, strengthening its estate program.
AROMATICS: Juicy pomegranate, cranberry, lingonberry, citrus peel and touch of vanilla bean.
ON THE PALATE: Ripe, red cherry and raspberry with notes of sassafras. Medium body with a bright acidity and bursting with rich concentrated flavor. Berries and cream evoke a velvety finish.
