Lucienne 2013 Doctor's Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir
93 points Wine Spectator
Exhibits a rich, juicy core of blackberry, wild berry and pomegranate, with spicy floral scents that are expansive on the palate. Ends with a long, intricate aftertaste that reverberates with flavor. (JL) (2/2016)
92 points Vinous
Vivid ruby. Sexy smoke-accented red and dark berries on the nose, with a potpourri nuance adding complexity. Sweet, penetrating black raspberry and cola flavors are sharpened by tangy minerality, delivering solid punch while coming off as lithe. The sappy, very persistent, gently tannic finish repeats the red fruit and floral notes, showing very good clarity and alluring spiciness. (JR) (8/2015)
About The Wine: This wine is the most robust of the Lucienne Pinot Noirs, with aromas of dark fruits, red cherry, spices and a hint of toasty vanilla. On the palate, a burst of red cherry, ripe strawberry, and red plum flavors give a fleeting impression of sweetness, which is moderated on the finish by rounded tannins.
After harvesting the fruit, we de-stem and hand-sort the grapes before moving them into open-top fermenters where we use gentle, manual punch-downs to protect the delicacy of the Pinot Noir grapes. Once fermentation is complete, we rack the free-run juice into French oak barrels (50% new) where the wine ages for 14 months before bottling.
About Doctor’s Vineyard: Located in the center of the Santa Lucia Highlands, this vineyard experiences warmer temperatures and higher winds than other Hahn vineyards do. Wide row spacing in Doctor’s (11 feet by 7 feet) also offers greater sun exposure, and the fog burns off early in the day at this site.
