THE HESS COLLECTION WINES FROM MOUNT VEEDER: Donald Hess was attracted to Mount Veeder’s high elevation and challenging mountain climate, believing this rugged land would produce great grapes, leading to even greater wines. Mount Veeder is distinguished in Napa for
having the highest elevation, coolest growing season and geographically diverse soils among its valleys and slopes. The Hess Collection Mount Veeder wines are known for complexity, structure and surprising elegance. Our estate vineyards on Mount Veeder are sustainably farmed, as directed by our founder’s guiding philosophy: “Nurture the land, return what you take.”
THE LION CABERNET SAUVIGNON: The lion has been the emblem of the Hess Family for nine generations. It has come to symbolize the bold and persevering nature of founder Donald Hess and our winery home on Mount Veeder. “Live Each Day with the Heart and Courage of The Lion” has been the Hess Family credo for nine generations and The Lion Cabernet Sauvignon represents the very best Cabernet Sauvignon we produce from our estate vineyards on Mount Veeder in the very best vintages. The 2013 vintage marks the first vintage that is a winemaking collaboration between consulting winemaker Celia Welch and Hess Winemaker Dave Guffy.
TASTE WITH THE WINEMAKER: “Opaque and concentrated at first glance, this wine is dense and rather forthcoming with aromas of cassis, blackberries and a sense of juiciness one can almost
smell. All this concentrated fruit is wrapped in a veritable “pie crust” of fine and exotic aromas derived from new French oak barrels such as cedar, chocolate, mulling spices and sandalwood. The textural harmonies pull at your palate with sweet, ultra-ripe fruit, while notable tannins provide the supporting structure to all this opulence. While wines of this style are traditionally aged many years, it would be a shame not to enjoy this wonderfully ripe, young wine in the near term before putting some away for the long haul.”
– Dave Guffy, Director of Winemaking
VINTAGE NOTES: “Early, even & excellent” is the best way to describe the 2013 growing season on Mount Veeder, beginning with a moderately warm spring with little moisture, leading to an early bud break. Just one heat spike occurred during the summer, allowing the grapes to lazily hang on the vine and ripen with determination. A touch of rain threw a scare in September but warmer days and breezy weather kept the fruit in good order, ultimately resulting in an abundant harvest with
