Domaine Avetissyan, the Kataro winery is located on a picturesque hillside in a lush region of Hadrut in the Republic of Artsakh. Named after an ancient church located in the village of Togh, Kataro is produced from Khnodgny (also known as Sireni) an indigenous grape variety grown on the slopes of Togh at an elevation of 600-700 metres. The result is modern wines from a truly ancient wine-growing region.
The Kataro Artsakh is produced 100% from Khndoghny. The deep red colour of this wine is combined with the intensity of dark berry and ripe red fruit aromas, further enhanced by the mouth filling medium long finish. It pairs well with Armenian barbeque, strong local cheeses and rich food in general.
The grapes are grown in the Togh village in the region Hadrut of Armenia where the soil is predominantly clay. The climate is mild and temperate. Average temperature is 11 °C, which fluctuates annually between 22 °C in July and −1 °C in January. Average precipitation can reach 710 mm and it is foggy for over 100 days a year. Late harvest selection and hand sorting of the grapes gives this wine depth, complexity and elegance. Wine is aged in Caucasian oak barrels from Artsakh.
