Mas Pellier 2016 Duche D'Uzes France
Mas Pellier cuvees are the essence of what we call here in the US “Boutique wines”. Their estate wines are fully handcrafted. I discovered them by wondering one morning in a local market close to the town of Uzes were the owner Christophe Pellier hand sell his wines every Friday morning.
The winery is in Blauzac, half hour northwest of Nimes, on a property of 33 Hectares. Christophe is the 5th Generation. However, it was not meant to be as his father and Grand Father did not want him to perpetuate the winery and directed him to a different career. At the time they were selling all their production to a local cooperative taking care only of the vinicultural aspect of the vines. Despite the odds, Christophe decided to come back on the vineyard. First, he bought more lands, then planted new cepages and released his first cuvee in 2010. His timing was just perfect. In 2012 a part of the vineyard got promoted from Vin de Pays to one of the most recent French appellation: Duche D’uzes.
With 2000 years of winemaking, the AOC is not intended to produce vast quantities of wines but rather a high-end, topquality wine. The production per hectare is limited at 48hl for the reds and 55hl for the whites. The principal grapes allowed in the appellation for the reds are Grenache, Syrah for the primary and Carignan, Cinsault and Mourvedre for secondary grapes. For the whites Grenache blanc and Viognier for the primary then Marsanne and Roussanne.
Country : France
Appellation : Duche D’uzes
Blend: 60% Syrah 40% Grenache
Climate: Mediterranean climate but slightly gentle due to the distance from the coast and the high ground that curb the maritime influence
Soil description: The soil geology has created a variety of small formations with pockets of sandstone, marl, pebble, alluvia and hard limestone. These formations are dotted acress the landscape, forming the mosaic of soil that are the strengths of the Appellation of Duche D’Uzes. In 1985 a survey mapped the area’s winemaking potential, finding uniform parcels of land to organize planting and optimize the grape varieties used to produce the AOC.
Winemaking: Vinification and maturation in stainless still tank.
Wine description: Deep in red color with aromatics, spiced and fruity Mas Pellier Duche D’Uzes shows a hint of liquorice, pepper and black olive, proudly revealing the southern temperament.
