93 Points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate - Keeping with Monteleone's botanical theme, the 2018 Etna Rosso Rumex is named after the wildflower Romice dell'Etna (Rumex aetnensis), which is among the first to put down roots in new volcanic flows. This robust little colonial species is depicted on the wine's front label. Rumex is a pure expression of Nerello Mascalese that draws its fruit from a tiny parcel (measuring just 0.2 hectares = .49 acred) on the north side of the volcano in the Contrada Pontale Palino at 680 meters in altitude. This expression shows dark fruit and wild cherry with medium fruit weight and nice power to drive it over the finish (and perhaps pair it with a pasta and long-simmered meat ragù). The finish is a bit tart and sour, so shave extra cheese on your pasta. Production is only 1,300 bottles. Monica Larner

  • Grape variety: Nerello Mascalese 100%.
  • Total Production: 108 cases from a half an acre vineyard
  • Denomination: Etna DOC
  • Production area: the grapes come from a small vineyard located on the north side of Etna, in the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia, 680 meters above sea level. The soil is typically volcanic, composed of sand and ash.
  • Cultivation of the vineyard: the vineyards, 100 and more years old, are bred with the typical Etna sapling system: each vine is supported by a chestnut wood tutor pole.
  • Vinification: the grapes are harvested in the early hours of the morning and delivered to the cellar in boxes of 10 kg. After destemming, fermentation takes place in small tubs without temperature control. During the maceration, of about 12 days, the hat is broken daily through manual punching down. After racking, malolactic fermentation takes place spontaneously.
  • Aging: the wine evolves for 12 months in oak tonneaux French of 700 and 500 liters. It then refines in bottle for a further 12 months before release.
  • Alcohol content: 13,5% Vol.
