Perchance Estates 2018 Beckstoffer Georges III Vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
98 Points Jeb Dunnuck - You have to give winemaker Mike Smith credit, the guy makes brilliant wines wherever he goes. This was my first chance tasting this new project and these are both impressive wines. There are only 341 cases of the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Georges III Vineyard, which hails from a historic site Rutherford and was brought up in 85% new French oak. Its dense purple hue is followed by rich notes of crème de cassis, mulled black cherries, tobacco leaf, chocolate, and a hint of cedar. These carry to a full-bodied, incredibly seamless 2018 with no hard edges, flawless balance, and ripe, velvety tannins. It opens up with time in the glass, and while already complex and enjoyable, it's going to evolve for 20-25 years in cold cellars. It's a gorgeous wine.
Winemaker Notes - The inaugural vintage of Perchance Cabernet Sauvignon benefited from an impeccable growing season, and its particular Georges III blocks and rows were ideally positioned to capitalize upon the optimal weather. Appropriately timed rains sprinkled in at just the right moments, and a nice consistent warming allowed me to optimize the crop load and pick the fruit on my own terms, as opposed to Mother Nature’s. The resulting juice was aged in 85% new Tonnellerie, Darnajou, and Taransaud oak barrels for 23 months, resulting in a spectacular and vibrant young Cabernet.
Incredibly long legs and the deep purple hue greet the eye. One swirl reveals a sensational nose of blackcurrants, barrel spice, and subtle toasty baking spice. The stunning aromatics are somehow impossibly surpassed as the wine reveals even greater richness and intensity dancing across the mid-palate. Layers of magnificently proportioned, ripe, intense blue fruit, full body, pronounced purity, and a resolute core of sweet, velvety viscosity fill the glass. Shining bright in this offering is Beckstoffer Vineyard Georges III and its ability to produce an extraordinary wine full of rich flavor and legacy distinction, while remaining enthusiastically playful on the palate. Round and integrated tannins dazzle throughout, as the wine’s component parts are focused and flawless. Synchronized into a symphony of flavor, this wine culminates with a luxuriously long and gratifying finish. The wine strikes a perfect balance of being approachable now with a proper decant, and it will evolve over the next 20+ years. A truly spectacular debut!
