The Sonoma Coast American Viticulture Area “AVA” (as designated in 1987 by the U.S. Treasury Department’s Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau) may be Sonoma County’s most enigmatic wine region. From the wild, wind-swept northern coast to the gently rolling hills of the southern dairy land, it spans the county.
Much of Sonoma County’s most celebrated Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays are grown here which consists of around 2000 vineyard acres. Direct, daily influence from the Pacific Ocean defines the appellation. In the northern reach, vineyards are planted high on ridges just a few miles inland. Many lie above the fog that moves in to blanket lower elevations in the afternoon.
The heart of the AVA includes the Freestone area, a sheltered, pastoral valley where hillside vineyards bask in sun when it breaks through the fog. In the south, vines in adobe soils grow to the edge of salt mashes bordering San Pablo Bay. And within the Sonoma Coast AVA lies the wind- and fog-influenced Petaluma Gap area, named after a coastal mountain opening that allows winds from the Pacific to breeze through the town of Petaluma and then roar south to San Pablo Bay. Wineries here are represented by the Petaluma Gap Winegrowers Alliance, and the Petaluma Gap got its own AVA designation in December 2017.
The grapes for the Prosper 2014 Pinot Noir come from this area. It is a wine of exceptional quality; medium body, fresh and bright, it's a delectable example of Sonoma Coast Pinot. It offers big, ripe blackberry and cherry flavors around a smoky core of oak, smooth finish and balanced tannins. You get great color, great fruit with slight sweetness from the French Oak but not over oaked.
Wines like Kosta Browne, Boisset, Dutton, Martinelli, Twomey from Sonoma Coast AVA fetch as much as $150 a bottle. But you don’t have to spend that kind of money to get a fantastic Sonoma Coast Pinot for a fraction of that cost. This wine offers all you’re looking for from a great Pinot; prestigious AVA, great fruit, great structure and great balance. You’ll be happy to offer this wine to your guests or drink it with your family over the weekend.
This wine pairs well with red meats and smoked duck or BBQ. Enjoy...
