Gold Medal – 2020 Mundus Vini Germany.

It all started when two college friends, Riccardo Gagliardi and Arsen Zadoyan, found an old vine Areni vineyard in the Vayots Dzor region, established a winery and called it Rikars (Rik for Riccardo and Ars for Arsen). Riccardo and his family have been making wine in Tuscany for few generations, so he brought his winemaking skills, while Arsen brought local know how. Davit is one of the two wines they are making and they are making them very well.

2017 Rikars Davit is made of 100% Areni grape varietal sourced from 30 to 100-year-old vines from Vayots Dzor region at an altitude of 4000 feet above sea level.

  • Fermentation was conducted in Italian style concrete tanks and aged in new Caucasian oak barrels for 7 months.
  • Color: Intense ruby red
  • Nose: Aromas of dark fruit, approaching black cherry, chocolate and tobacco along with cherry liqueur and lavender
  • Taste: Bright Areni fruit jumps out of the glass. The initial mouthfeel is that of big gulp of fruit, mainly cherries approaching cherry cola. It has good acidity and structure. The tannins have been softened and tamed by the Caucasian oak, and at the end chocolate and dried fruit emerge and add complexity to this easy drinking wine.
  • Finish: Long, soft, pleasing and enjoyable
  • Food Pairing: Anything from grilled sausages, pasta with spicy marinara sauce.
