Merlot is a Bordeaux grape variety grown in locations worldwide, including France, Italy, the United States, Australia, and even Chile. Merlot was initially being mentioned in the 19th century in France. However, the first official record dated 1784 was created by a Bordeaux official who was most likely a politician or another high-ranking public official. He claimed that Merlot was the best wine in the world. Like other types of wine, there comes a moment when it becomes prevalent for no apparent reason. It wasn't until the 1970s that Merlot became well-known.

Merlot Wine cultivation exploded in the United States due to the increased demand, particularly in California and Washington. Until the late 1980s, it was the most widely planted grape variety in the United States. After Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon, it is presently the fourth most planted grape in the United States. Merlot vines were first planted in Italy in the late 1800s. It was utilized as a blending grape with Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese in Super Tuscan wines. It was also popular in other parts of the world. Merlot is currently the fifth most widely cultivated grape in the United States.
