Orin Swift Cellars began in 1995, when David Swift Phinney, on a whim, accepted a friend's invitation to spend a semester "studying" in Florence, Italy. After a couple more years of study, she graduated and got a position as a temporary harvest worker at Robert Mondavi Winery in 1997. He started Orin Swift Cellars in 1998, deciding that if he was going to work this hard, it had to be for himself. Orin is his father's middle name, and Swift is his mother's maiden name.
He spent the next decade making wine for others as well as himself, growing the business to what it is today, starting with two tons of Zinfandel and not much else.
