The Khachen 2021 Areni Reserve is a powerful yet refined expression of Armenia’s most historic red grape, Areni Noir, grown in the high-altitude vineyards of Aghavnadzor, Vayots Dzor. This reserve bottling represents a meticulous selection of Khachen’s finest vineyard blocks and is crafted for longevity, structure, and elegance.

For millennia, Armenian vinetenders have cultivated Areni Noir in these dramatic highlands. The grape’s thick skins and naturally low pH lend themselves to wines of exceptional balance and aging potential, marked by vibrant acidity, medium-firm tannins, and layered red- and black-fruit character.

While the terroir is ancient, the approach is modern. Winemaker Alex H., trained at the University of California, Davis, combines contemporary technique with deep respect for tradition. Grapes are harvested early in the morning to preserve acidity, collected in small bins, and sorted twice—first at the cluster level, then berry-by-berry by hand—to ensure only pristine fruit is used.

Following a brief cold soak, fermentation proceeded under controlled conditions, with a short maceration to refine structure. After malolactic fermentation, the wine aged 12 months in new French oak barrels, followed by an additional 6 months in stainless steel tanks, allowing integration and purity of expression. The wine is unfiltered to preserve texture and complexity.

The result is a serious, age-worthy Areni Noir, fated by both history and nature to stand among the world’s most compelling mountain wines.
