97 Points James Suckling - This great Chateauneuf combines the richness of the vintage with remarkable precision and vitality. Stacks of ripe damson plum, licorice and candied orange. Great tannin structure and lots of power on the full-bodied palate, with bitter chocolate and a stony character that builds at the very long, super-focused finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

94 Points RVF Guide 2024 - “Situated in the cool area of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the domaine produces wines of the classic style without destemming and aged in concrete tank. Without loss of any power, in the last few years the wines have gained in finesse. The production is from old vine grenache. The 2021 Châteauneuf has a delicious nose of red berries and cherry. A hint of spice, garrigue and bay leaf adds complexity. It is a moderately powerful wine in the style of the vintage. Beautiful freshness on the palate; vibrancy to the texture.” - Olivier Poussier

Laurent Charvin has only 10 ha. of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Until recently, Laurent was one of the remaining growers to vinify traditionally, with whole-cluster fermentations. Now, others have seen his success and are following his lead. In addition to leaving the stems, Laurent's élevage is undertaken in concrete tank - no barrel. While the domaine is certified organic, Laurent also employs some biodynamic practices. His wines all undergo indigenous yeast fermentation. The 2021 blend is 80% grenache, 7% syrah, 5% mourvèdre, 4% vaccarèse, 4% counoise. The wine does not undergo any filtration or fining. It is bottled after 21 months.

Olivier Poussier, editor in chief of Revue du Vin de France who writes on wines from the Southern Rhône and Champagne, has now elevated Domaine Charvin to a 3-star rated producer in the 2023 RVF Green Guide (Guide Verte), along with Clos des Papes, Clos du Mont-Olivet, Chateau Rayas and Domaine du Vieux Donjon being the ONLY other domaines to receive a 3-star rating in the region.
