The Romans planted vineyards in the Rhone Valley over a millennium ago. The Rhone Valley is divided between the Northern Rhone and the Southern Rhone. Some of the Best Rhone Wines in Northern Rhone come from Cornas, which is exclusively made from Syrah grapes and Cote Rotie, which is predominantly made from Syrah grapes and sometime Viognier is added for good measure. The vineyards in Cote Rotie are unique because of the steep slopes facing the river and their stone walls. In Southern Rhone, the Best Rhone Wines come from Chateauneuf du Pape which is a blend of various Rhone varietals, including Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre, among others.
