93 Points Burghound - 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet “Clos St. Jean”: (from sandy and rather light soil). A somber but spicier nose of plum and various wild dark berries is trimmed in hints of warm earth. The suave, round and delicious medium-bodied flavors possess a seductive mid-palate texture, all wrapped in a less mineral-driven but more complex finale that is slightly firmer. This offers very good development potential yet could also be approached young if desired.

Chateau de la Maltroye - Situated in Chassagne-Montrachet in the south of the Cote d'Or, Chateau de la Maltroye has been a family property since 1939. It is easily recognizable by its 18th century, glazed tile roof. The vineyard encompasses over 32 acres in Chassagne-Montrachet and 5 acres in Santenay.

Jean-Pierre Cornut, the current wine-grower, has magnificently reinvigorated this domain which now produces some of the best Chassagne-Montrachet on the market.

Indeed, the whites made by Jean-Pierre are vibrant, intense, and thrilling. Chassagne naturally lends power and richness to chardonnay, but Cornut is expert in retaining and extracting great tangy acidity and mineral depth to match.

But a clear sign of his wine-making ability is that he is also one of Chassagne-Montrachet’s leading producer of reds. Pinot Noir was once the dominant variety in Chassagne, but has today retreated to just the core of the most suitable terroir for the grape. His monopole Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Clos du Chateau’ is one of the village’s best reds, and one of the best quality-for-price reds in Burgundy.

From the Winery - Jean-Pierre Cournut noted 2020 is “one of those rare vintages where it was possible to have zero interventions of any kind as the fruit was essentially perfect. One oddity though is that we began picking the pinot before the chardonnay. We picked from the 20th to the 25th of August and the fruit was spotless so there was almost no sorting required. Yields were variable at between 45 to 50 in white but definitely lower in red. The potential alcohols were also variable but basically ranged mostly from 12.8 to 13.3% with one wine at 13.9%. One change that I did make though was I reduced the total cuvaison time for the reds to between 15 and 19 days rather than my usual 25. I really wanted to preserve as much freshness as I could, and I didn’t see the extra 5 to 7 days adding anything beneficial. 2020 is an excellent vintage and in both colors and if you put 2018 and 2019 together, you would have something approximating 2020.”
