Tasting Notes

Lapo Berti’s 2020 Barolo del Comune di La Morra DOCG is a masterclass in terroir-driven winemaking. Sourced exclusively from organically farmed MGA vineyards in La Morra, this 100% Nebbiolo showcases the elegance and nerve of the commune’s unique marl-rich soils at 513 meters elevation.

In the glass, it opens with expressive aromatics of red cherry, crushed raspberry, and wild strawberry, layered with notes of anise, dried herbs, rose petal, leather, and forest floor. The palate is both vibrant and taut, offering a focused, nervy tension that is typical of top-tier La Morra Barolo. Crunchy tannins provide structure and grip, while a long, savory finish lingers with hints of spice, balsamic undertones, and clay minerality.

This is a Barolo that begins with intensity, remains coiled with energy throughout, and will reward cellaring over the next 10–20 years. A stunning achievement for lovers of classical, unmanipulated Nebbiolo.

🏞️ Winemaking & Terroir

The grapes were hand-harvested in mid-October, then destemmed, crushed, and fermented using only indigenous yeasts. Fermentation occurred both in stainless steel tanks and open-top wooden demi-muids, followed by a 4-week maceration on the skins, with manual punchdowns. The wine was aged for 24 months in used oak barrels (225L and 500L, 5–11 years old), then bottled without fining or filtration under a natural cork during the waning moon.

Farming is strictly organic, with a strong focus on biodiversity and soil vitality. No selected yeasts, copper sulfate, added tannins, or synthetic agents were used at any point in the winemaking process. Sulfite use is kept to a minimum.

👤 About Lapo Berti

Lapo Berti is a self-described nomadic winemaker whose journey took him from Tuscany to Piedmont, Australia, Burgundy, and Oregon, before finally settling in La Morra, the heart of Barolo. Apprenticing with legendary producers like Roberto Voerzio, Enzo Boglietti, and Nicolas Potel, Berti developed a distinct philosophy rooted in purity, transparency, and terroir expression.

Since founding his label in 2012 with just three barrels, he now crafts some of La Morra’s most exciting low-intervention wines, leasing and farming top vineyard parcels himself, including cru sites like Fossati and Le Coste.
