Tassi 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Giuseppe DOCG – Tuscany, Italy

Single-Vineyard Cru • 96 Vinous | 95+ Wine Advocate

The Tassi 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Giuseppe DOCG is a monumental, single-vineyard Brunello that represents the pinnacle of the estate’s production. Named in honor of the family patriarch, Giuseppe Tassi, this cru is sourced from the upper, most expressive section of Vigna Tassi in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, one of Montalcino’s most respected subzones.

The exceptional 2016 vintage—widely considered one of the greatest of the decade—delivered ideal balance between power and finesse. A mild spring, a warm summer without excess heat spikes, and well-timed September rains allowed Sangiovese to reach perfect phenolic maturity, preserving freshness while developing soft, polished tannins and profound structure.

Fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged 36 months in large traditional oak casks (30–40 hl), this Brunello adheres to a classic, long-aging philosophy that favors purity, longevity, and terroir expression over immediacy.

The wine is dark, layered, and deeply expressive, offering remarkable depth today while clearly built for decades in the cellar.

Critical Acclaim

  • 96 Points – Vinous (Eric Guido)
“Dark and brooding… sour cherry, mentholated herbs, spiced orange peel and animal musk. Deeply textural and velvety, yet lifted and pure. So much power here, yet perfectly balanced. A wine of enormous potential—lose this in the cellar for six years or more.”
  • 95+ Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (Monica Larner)
“A grounded, concentrated Brunello with dark plum, blackberry, potting soil and cured tobacco. More austere and powerful than other Tassi releases. Give this a few extra years to age.”
  • 95 Points – Decanter
  • 93 Points - James Suckling
