J. Charpentier Comte de Chenizot Brut NV – Champagne, France
True Champagne begins in the vineyard, and few wines illustrate this better than J. Charpentier Comte de Chenizot Brut NV. Produced by one of Champagne's respected Grower Champagne estates, this limited-production cuvée is crafted entirely from grapes grown on the Charpentier family's own vineyards in the Vallée de la Marne. Unlike the large Champagne houses that purchase fruit from hundreds of growers, J. Charpentier controls every stage of production—from vineyard to bottle—allowing each wine to express the character of its terroir with remarkable authenticity.
Named after François Vincent Guyot de Chenizot, an influential landowner whose generosity helped shape the village of Villers-sous-Châtillon before the French Revolution, this cuvée honors a remarkable legacy. Upon his death, Chenizot left his estate to benefit the local community by funding a school, an orphanage, and a working farm. Today, the Charpentier family pays tribute to his enduring spirit through one of their most distinctive Champagnes.
Comte de Chenizot is an elegant blend of 33.3% Chardonnay, 33.3% Pinot Noir, and 33.3% Pinot Meunier, carefully assembled from three separate harvest vintages in equal proportions. After fermentation, the wine spends more than 30 months aging on its lees, developing exceptional richness, texture, and complexity while maintaining remarkable freshness.
Produced in quantities of only approximately 15,000 bottles, this is a rare Grower Champagne that offers extraordinary craftsmanship at a fraction of the price of many prestigious Grandes Marques.
Tasting Notes
Brilliant pale gold with a persistent stream of fine bubbles, the bouquet opens with aromas of ripe orchard fruit, baked apple, lemon zest, white peach, toasted brioche, honey, roasted almonds, and white chocolate, layered over delicate chalky minerality.
The palate is generous yet remarkably fresh, revealing flavors of golden apple, citrus, pastry cream, toasted hazelnut, brioche, and subtle honey, supported by lively acidity and a creamy mousse. Mineral notes provide balance and precision, leading to a long, elegant finish filled with citrus freshness and delicate pastry nuances.
Rich enough to accompany an entire meal while maintaining the finesse expected from premium Champagne, Comte de Chenizot beautifully combines power, elegance, and complexity.
About J. Charpentier
J. Charpentier is a family-owned Récoltant-Manipulant (RM) Grower Champagne estate located in Villers-sous-Châtillon, in the heart of the Vallée de la Marne.
The family's Champagne heritage spans five generations, beginning in the early twentieth century when both the Charpentier and Claisse families devoted themselves to vineyard cultivation. Following the marriage of Claudine Claisse and Jacky Charpentier in 1974, these two distinguished winegrowing families united their expertise to create the modern estate.
Today, Jacky Charpentier and his son Jean-Marc continue this tradition across thirteen hectares of estate vineyards spread among ten villages, producing handcrafted Champagnes that emphasize terroir, sustainability, and authentic family winemaking.
Unlike large commercial Champagne houses, every bottle of J. Charpentier is produced exclusively from estate-grown fruit, making each cuvée a genuine expression of its origin.
