Frederick Hess, a Swiss immigrant who founded a German-language newspaper in San Francisco, founded the La Jota Vineyard Company in 1898.
The La Jota Vineyard Co. was founded in 1898 and is steeped in the tradition of Napa Valley winemaking. Small quantities of mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc are produced today by winemaker Chris Carpenter from the winery's estate La Jota Vineyard and the adjoining W.S. Keyes Vineyard.
