Besserat de Bellefon Rosé Brut Champagne NV – Champagne, France
The Besserat de Bellefon Rosé Brut is an elegant, gastronomic rosé Champagne from one of Champagne’s historic houses, combining delicate red fruit, floral aromatics, vibrant acidity and the exceptionally fine, creamy mousse that has become a signature of Besserat de Bellefon.
Founded in 1843, Besserat de Bellefon has long cultivated a distinctive identity around Champagne intended for the table. Its Rosé Brut follows the house's special méthode developed in 1930, using less liqueur de tirage during secondary fermentation to create a lighter, more delicate effervescence. According to the estate, the resulting mousse is smooth, creamy and persistent. The wine also undergoes no malolactic fermentation, helping preserve freshness, acidity and aromatic precision.
92 Points – James Suckling
James Suckling awarded the Besserat de Bellefon Rosé Brut 92 points, highlighting its focused character, red-fruit and floral profile, chalky dimension and bright acidity. The blend is led by Pinot Meunier, supported by Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

A reviewed disgorgement of the Cuvée des Moines Brut Rosé was noted for its delicate red-fruit and floral aromatics, chalky character and elegant, refined palate. Because this review relates to a specific older disgorgement and blend, we would identify it as such rather than imply that every current bottle is identical.
Tasting Notes
A delicate soft pink in the glass with exceptionally fine, clear bubbles.
The nose is expressive and refined, opening with wild strawberry, red currant, raspberry and other small red berries, followed by hawthorn, floral notes and a subtle touch of sweet almond.
On the palate, the Champagne is bright, fresh and beautifully balanced. Wild strawberry and red currant are joined by citrus and delicate mineral notes, while the house's unusually fine effervescence creates a silky, creamy texture. Vibrant acidity keeps the wine energetic and precise through a fresh, lightly spicy finish.
It is simultaneously delicate and flavorful—a rosé Champagne with enough freshness for an aperitif but enough structure and complexity to accompany an entire meal.
The Besserat de Bellefon Style
Besserat de Bellefon traces its history to 1843 and has developed a particularly close association with gastronomy and fine dining.
A defining moment came in 1930, when Victor Besserat set out to produce a Champagne with a lighter mousse that could comfortably accompany a meal. The house continues to use less liqueur de tirage than conventional Champagne production, creating a particularly fine and airy effervescence.
For the Rosé Brut, the absence of malolactic fermentation further preserves the natural acidity and freshness of the fruit. The result is a style the house describes as "Vibrant and Sensual"—a fitting description for a Champagne that combines red-fruit richness with freshness and finesse.
Vineyards & Blend
The current Rosé Brut is composed of:
50% Pinot Meunier
25% Chardonnay
25% Pinot Noir
Fruit is sourced from approximately 40 crus throughout Champagne, including Grand Cru villages Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Louvois, along with Premier Cru sources including Bisseuil, Vertus, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Grauves and Cumières.
Approximately 11% red wine, sourced from Bouzy, Les Riceys and Vincelles, contributes color, fruit and structure to the final blend.
Winemaking & Aging
The Rosé Brut is made using Besserat de Bellefon's distinctive approach to secondary fermentation, designed to produce a particularly delicate mousse.
Importantly, malolactic fermentation is avoided, preserving the wine's natural freshness and fruit character.
The Champagne spends a minimum of three years on its lees, followed by at least six months after disgorgement before release. Dosage is 8 g/L.
Food Pairing
Unlike rosé Champagne that is primarily positioned as an aperitif, Besserat de Bellefon Rosé Brut has the structure and complexity to be a true food wine.
Excellent pairings include:
- Pan-seared langoustines or prawns
- Salmon or tuna tartare
- Lobster and shellfish
- Duck breast
- Foie gras
- Charcuterie
- Roast poultry
- Soft cheeses
- Fresh berries and lightly sweet fruit desserts
The estate specifically recommends pairings such as foie gras with gingerbread, roasted prawns with orange and pomegranate, and pan-seared langoustines.
Serve well chilled at 46–50°F (8–10°C).

Its Pinot Meunier-led blend gives the wine generous red-fruit character, while Chardonnay contributes freshness and Pinot Noir adds structure. Most distinctive, however, is Besserat de Bellefon's exceptionally fine mousse and avoidance of malolactic fermentation—producing a rosé Champagne that feels simultaneously creamy, energetic and remarkably light on the palate.
For Champagne drinkers looking beyond the familiar grandes marques, this is an elegant and distinctive expression with genuine gastronomic credentials.
