A Mature Single-Vineyard Barolo in Rare Magnum Format

The Boroli 2004 Barolo Villero DOCG 1.5 Liter Magnum is a rare opportunity to experience mature Barolo from one of the historic vineyards of Castiglione Falletto, presented in the age-worthy magnum format.

Produced entirely from Nebbiolo, this wine comes from the celebrated Villero vineyard, a site long recognized for producing Barolo with an exceptional combination of structure, elegance, aromatic complexity and longevity.

Boroli's 2004 Villero was produced in extremely limited quantities. According to the estate's vintage records, production included just 3,369 standard bottles, 150 magnums and 30 larger-format bottles—making this 1.5L magnum one of only 150 produced.

That rarity, combined with more than two decades of bottle development, makes this an especially compelling bottle for Barolo collectors and lovers of mature Nebbiolo.

The Villero Cru

Villero is one of the historic vineyards of Castiglione Falletto, one of Barolo's most important communes.

Situated approximately 280–300 meters above sea level, Villero enjoys favorable south and southwest exposures. Its soils are dominated by marl, clay and silt over marl, with limestone and sandy components. The soil's ability to retain moisture helps the Nebbiolo vines maintain balance throughout the growing season.

Boroli describes Villero as producing a very classic, long-lived expression of Barolo distinguished by structure, balance and refined tannins. The combination of clay-rich soils and favorable exposure gives the wine both power and aromatic depth.

This is precisely the kind of vineyard where the slow-ripening Nebbiolo grape can reveal its extraordinary ability to evolve over decades.

The Exceptional 2004 Vintage

The 2004 vintage is an important part of this wine's appeal.

After a cold winter with substantial snowfall, generous spring rainfall replenished the vineyards' water reserves. Summer followed with pleasant temperatures, without excessive heat, while September brought sunny, dry conditions that continued into October.

These conditions proved particularly favorable for late-ripening Nebbiolo. Boroli harvested its Villero fruit between October 6 and October 15 and officially classifies the quality of its 2004 Villero vintage as Excellent.

The resulting wine combined the richness and structure associated with Villero with the balance needed for long-term development.

Tasting Notes

Now with more than 20 years of evolution, the 2004 Boroli Villero offers the layered aromatic complexity that makes mature Barolo so captivating.

Expect a garnet-red color moving toward brick at the rim, followed by aromas of dried cherry, wild berries, plum, rose petals, violet and licorice. With air, more mature nuances of tobacco, leather, dried herbs, earth and savory spice should emerge.

The palate remains structured and full, with mature Nebbiolo fruit supported by polished tannins and savory complexity. Red cherry and plum lead toward licorice, dried flowers, spice and earthy mineral tones, with the structure and acidity carrying the wine through a persistent finish.

The estate itself highlights the wine's rich, broad bouquet, licorice character, solid structure and distinctive elegance.

Given the age of the wine, I would recommend standing the bottle upright well before serving and carefully decanting to separate any natural sediment.

Critical Acclaim

93 Points – Wine Enthusiast

92 Points – James Suckling

90 Points – Wine Spectator

Wine Spectator found blackberry, dark chocolate and floral characteristics, accompanied by a full-bodied palate and substantial tannic structure.

Why the Magnum Matters

The 1.5-liter magnum format makes this bottle particularly interesting.

A magnum contains the equivalent of two standard 750ml bottles, making it ideal for a special dinner, celebration or serious wine tasting.

More importantly for collectors, large-format bottles are prized for their ability to mature gradually. The ratio of wine to oxygen inside a magnum generally encourages slower evolution than in a standard bottle.

And in this particular case, rarity is significant: Boroli reports production of only 150 magnums of the 2004 Villero.

Winemaking

Villero is harvested by hand, with the vineyard divided into micro-parcels according to grape maturity. Individual lots are vinified separately in stainless steel before undergoing an extended submerged-cap maceration that can reach approximately 30 days.

The individual lots are then aged in wood before being blended and given further bottle maturation. Boroli says this approach is designed to produce the structured yet polished tannins and long-lived character associated with Villero.

Food Pairing

A mature Villero Barolo is an exceptional companion to rich, savory dishes.

Pair with braised short ribs, osso buco, roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, wild boar ragù, truffle risotto, porcini mushrooms, tajarin with truffles, aged Parmigiano-Reggiano or Castelmagno cheese.

For a bottle of this age and format, I would make the wine itself the centerpiece of the meal.

About Boroli

The Boroli family traces its entrepreneurial history in Piedmont to 1831, first in textiles and later publishing. In the 1990s, Silvano and Elena Boroli turned their attention toward the Langhe and wine, eventually establishing Boroli as a producer focused particularly on Barolo.

Their son Achille Boroli joined the family enterprise in 2000 and later assumed responsibility for its wine-growing and winemaking activities.

The philosophy is centered on the belief that exceptional Barolo begins with exceptional vineyards. Villero has therefore played an important role in Boroli's exploration of individual Barolo crus and remains one of the estate's most important wines.

Why You'll Love It

This bottle combines several qualities that are increasingly difficult to find together: a great Barolo vineyard, an excellent mature vintage, more than two decades of bottle age, strong critical scores and an exceptionally rare large format.

But the biggest selling point for MyWinePlus should be:

Only 150 magnums produced.

That deserves prominent placement near the top of the product page because it immediately distinguishes this bottle from ordinary listings of mature Barolo. Boroli's own vintage archive confirms that production figure.
