Château de Saint Cosme 2023 Hominis Fides Gigondas – Rhône Valley, France
96 Points Jeb Dunnuck | 96 Points James Suckling | 96 Points Wine Spectator | 95 Points Wine Advocate | 94+ Points Vinous
The Château de Saint Cosme 2023 Hominis Fides Gigondas is one of the great single-vineyard expressions of Grenache in the Southern Rhône—a remarkably concentrated yet refined wine produced from exceptionally old vines rooted in the sandy, calcareous soils of Gigondas.
Among Château de Saint Cosme's three celebrated single-vineyard Gigondas bottlings, Hominis Fides is traditionally considered the most elegant. Louis Barruol attributes that character to the vineyard's sandy soils, which allow Grenache to achieve extraordinary texture while producing unusually fine, polished tannins.
The 2023 vintage takes that elegance and combines it with serious depth. Dark berries, plum, cassis, licorice and wild herbs meet graphite, pepper, truffle, smoke and the unmistakable savory character of the Southern Rhône.
This is not simply another Gigondas. Only around 3,000 bottles were produced, making Hominis Fides one of Saint Cosme's rarest and most distinctive wines.
An Extraordinary Old-Vine Grenache Vineyard
Hominis Fides is a tiny single vineyard situated across the road from Saint Cosme's Le Claux vineyard. The estate's technical information describes some of its oldest vines as averaging around 90 years, while James Suckling identifies vines planted as far back as 1902.
The vineyard sits at approximately 990 feet elevation with a northwestern exposure. Its calcareous, sandy soils are particularly significant. Saint Cosme notes that the site contains Miocene-era sand mixed with clay and stones and compares the soil to that found at the legendary Château Rayas in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
That sand plays an important role in the character of Hominis Fides. Rather than producing sheer weight alone, the vineyard gives Grenache an unusually silky texture, aromatic complexity and remarkably refined tannins.
The 2023 Vintage
The 2023 Hominis Fides demonstrates an intriguing contrast between Southern Rhône power and remarkable finesse.
James Suckling specifically praised how gracefully the wine handles the vintage's hot, dry conditions, noting the integration of its plush tannins and the depth of its finish. Wine Spectator similarly found both strength and tension, recommending extended cellaring.
The result is a wine that is undeniably concentrated and full-bodied but never simply heavy. Freshness, mineral tension and fine tannins give all that fruit and power definition.
Tasting Notes
The 2023 Hominis Fides opens with intense aromas of blackberry, blueberry, black currant, damson plum and ripe black cherry, gradually revealing layers of licorice, roasted garrigue, dried violet and wild herbs.
With air, the wine becomes increasingly savory and mineral. Graphite, crushed stone, pepper, truffle and smoke mingle with cinnamon, nutmeg and rosemary.
The palate is broad, concentrated and layered, yet remarkably graceful for a Grenache of this intensity. Plush, beautifully integrated tannins surround a deep core of dark fruit, while vibrant acidity and mineral tension keep the wine fresh.
The finish is exceptionally long, structured and persistent—a compelling combination of power, elegance and old-vine Grenache character.

96 Points — James Suckling
Suckling praises the wine's surprising gracefulness given the warm vintage and its concentration, particularly its plush tannins, damson plum and licorice character. He notes the organically grown vines planted in 1902 and suggests the wine will be best from 2026 onward.
96 Points — Wine Spectator
Wine Spectator describes a powerful combination of black currant and plum with iron, cinnamon, nutmeg and rosemary, supported by fresh acidity and a long, structured finish. Their recommended drinking window is 2027–2042.
95 Points — Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Wine Advocate emphasizes blueberries, dark wild berries, spice and garrigue, describing a dense, layered wine with impressive intensity, perfume and length.
94+ Points — Vinous
Vinous finds cassis, licorice, ripe black cherry, dried herbs, spice and violets in a full-bodied, energetic wine with excellent balance, suggesting Hominis Fides may ultimately emerge as the strongest of Saint Cosme's three single-vineyard 2023 Gigondas wines.
There's also an additional score worth knowing: Wine Enthusiast awarded the wine 96 points, praising its rose-petal, cherry, raspberry, licorice and white-pepper character and recommending patience in the cellar.
That gives you four separate 96-point ratings for this wine.
Winemaking
The 2023 Hominis Fides is 100% Grenache, fermented in wooden vats with pumpovers and pigeage. The fruit undergoes whole-cluster fermentation using indigenous yeasts.
The wine is subsequently aged in traditional 228-liter barrels, 20% new, and bottled without fining or filtration.
This traditional, relatively low-intervention approach allows the vineyard and its ancient Grenache vines to remain at the center of the wine.

Food Pairing
Hominis Fides has enough depth for substantial dishes while its refined tannins and aromatic complexity allow it to work with more sophisticated preparations.
Pair it with roasted lamb, grilled ribeye, beef short ribs, braised beef, venison, duck, lamb stew, Provençal herbs, mushroom dishes or ratatouille.
Saint Cosme specifically recommends full-bodied Grenache with grilled meats, stews and braises.
Cellaring
Although already impressive, this is fundamentally a cellar-worthy Gigondas.
James Suckling suggests it becomes particularly attractive from 2026, while Wine Spectator recommends 2027–2042. Jeb Dunnuck also considers it capable of developing for two decades or longer.
For drinking young, I would recommend giving it several hours in a decanter. Collectors should consider allowing the wine another three to five years in bottle to begin showing its full complexity.
About Château de Saint Cosme
Château de Saint Cosme is one of the benchmark estates of Gigondas, with the Barruol family associated with the property since 1490.
Louis Barruol took over from his father in 1992 and pushed the domaine toward increasingly rigorous vineyard practices and quality-focused winemaking, eventually converting the estate to biodynamic viticulture in 2010. The estate is currently certified by Ecocert.
Its single-vineyard Gigondas wines—particularly Hominis Fides, Le Claux and Le Poste—represent some of the most terroir-focused and collectible expressions produced by the estate.
Hominis Fides is perhaps the most refined expression of the three: old-vine Grenache, an extraordinary sandy terroir, tiny production and the combination of Southern Rhône power with remarkable elegance.
