A Vintage Defined by Elegance | Equal Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault & Carignan | Released in 2020
Château Musar 2013 — The Elegance of Lebanon's Legendary Bekaa Valley
Few wines express the history, individuality and extraordinary winemaking heritage of Lebanon quite like Château Musar.
The 2013 Château Musar Red is a beautifully elegant and age-worthy red wine from Lebanon's historic Bekaa Valley, produced from an equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan.
Founded in 1930, Château Musar has earned worldwide recognition for producing distinctive wines that challenge convention, embrace vintage variation and develop remarkable complexity with age.
The 2013 vintage is particularly fascinating. While Château Musar is often associated with powerful, richly textured wines, this vintage reveals a more graceful, aromatic expression, with Cinsault contributing softness, freshness and delicate red-fruit character.
Aromas of ripe raspberries, blueberries, Mediterranean herbs and warm spices lead to an elegant palate layered with licorice, cinnamon, cloves and vibrant red fruit. Fine tannins, balanced acidity and a long, harmonious finish complete this compelling Lebanese red.
Praised by internationally respected wine commentators, including Steven Spurrier and Pedro Ballesteros MW, Château Musar 2013 captures the unmistakable personality of this legendary estate while offering a particularly refined expression of its historic vineyards.
For collectors of mature Bordeaux, traditional Rhône reds and distinctive Mediterranean wines, Château Musar 2013 offers a remarkable opportunity to discover the elegance and individuality of Lebanese fine wine.

The 2013 is particularly notable for its Cinsault-driven elegance, giving the wine a softer, more aromatic personality than some of Château Musar's more powerful vintages.
The 2013 Vintage — A Year Defined by Elegance
According to Château Musar's own vintage report, the 2013 harvest can be summarized in a single word: elegance.
The winter of 2012–2013 brought significantly more rain and snowfall than previous years, providing welcome relief after several relatively dry growing seasons.
April was cooler than usual, and by May the vineyards were exceptionally green and vigorous. Successful flowering and healthy yields suggested excellent prospects for the coming harvest.
However, a week of intense heat in late August caused sugar levels to rise sharply in Cabernet Sauvignon and Carignan.
Interestingly, Cinsault proved remarkably resilient to the climatic changes, maintaining its distinctive character and becoming the last red variety harvested, on September 27.
This unusual growing season produced a wine with attractive fruit concentration but also exceptional freshness, elegance and balance.
Rather than being dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon's structure and dark-fruit character, the finished wine displays the softer, more fragrant personality of Cinsault.
The result is a Château Musar that emphasizes finesse, aromatic complexity and harmony without sacrificing depth or aging potential.
Traditional Winemaking and Extended Maturation
Château Musar's winemaking philosophy is based on patience, minimal intervention and respect for the individuality of each vintage.
The 2013 vintage presented unusual fermentation conditions.
Red-wine fermentation proceeded exceptionally slowly, something the estate described as unprecedented. Temperatures remained below 29°C (84°F), and some fermentation vats required no temperature control.
By contrast, malolactic fermentation was completed surprisingly quickly, creating an unusual relationship between the two fermentation processes.
Following fermentation, the wines were aged for one year in French Nevers oak barrels.
The final blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan was assembled in spring 2016, and the wine was bottled during the summer of that year.
It then continued its maturation in Château Musar's cellars before its official release in 2020, approximately seven years after harvest.
This extended aging allows the wine's fruit, tannins, acidity and savory complexity to integrate naturally, producing the distinctive character for which Château Musar is internationally celebrated.
Château Musar — A Lebanese Wine Legend Since 1930
Founded in 1930 by Gaston Hochar, Château Musar is one of the most internationally recognized names in Lebanese wine.
The estate's vineyards are located in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, where Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan grow in gravelly soils over limestone near the villages of Aana and Kefraya.
The vineyards include mature bush vines, some originally planted in the 1930s, with naturally low yields that contribute to the concentration and character of the wines.
Gaston Hochar established the winery with a vision of producing fine wines that reflected Lebanon's ancient winemaking heritage while drawing inspiration from European traditions.
His son, Serge Hochar, subsequently became the driving force behind Château Musar's international reputation.
Having studied winemaking in Bordeaux, Serge developed a distinctive philosophy that embraced vintage variation, traditional winemaking and extended bottle maturation.
Under his leadership, Château Musar became internationally celebrated for wines of remarkable individuality and longevity.
Today, the Hochar family's legacy continues, making Château Musar an essential producer for anyone interested in the history and future of Lebanese fine wine.

Ballesteros praised the wine's balance, complexity and impressive volume, noting plum fruit, cedar, vanilla, licorice and developing savory notes. He also recommended vigorous decanting to help the wine open fully.
Together, these assessments reinforce the distinctive character of the 2013 vintage: elegant, aromatic, beautifully balanced and capable of extended aging.
Food Pairing — A Wine Made for Memorable Meals
The elegant fruit, Mediterranean spice and balanced acidity of Château Musar 2013 make it a versatile companion to a wide range of dishes.
Excellent pairings include roasted lamb, grilled lamb chops, duck breast, braised beef, venison, mushroom risotto, roasted eggplant, grilled vegetables and aged cheeses.
For a traditional Lebanese dining experience, serve it with lamb kebabs, kafta, chicken or lamb shawarma, spiced rice, roasted vegetables and an assortment of Lebanese mezze.
The wine's aromatic complexity and refined structure make it particularly appealing for a leisurely dinner shared with family and friends.
Decanting and Serving Recommendations
Château Musar Red is bottled unfined and unfiltered, preserving its natural character and allowing the wine to evolve over time.
As a result, sediment may develop with age.
For the 2013 vintage, stand the bottle upright before opening and decant carefully to separate the wine from any sediment.
Pedro Ballesteros MW specifically recommended vigorous decanting for this vintage to help overcome initially reduced aromas.
Allow approximately one hour of aeration as a starting point, adjusting according to the condition and evolution of the individual bottle.
Serve at approximately 64°F (18°C).
