Malahi 2023 Amber Skin Contact Dry Wine – Vayots Dzor, Armenia

Wine Overview

The Malahi 2023 Amber Dry Wine is a rare and historic expression of Armenia’s winemaking tradition, crafted from the rediscovered White Areni grape—an ancient variety once thought to be lost. Thanks to groundbreaking genetic studies by the Institute of Molecular Biology of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, this grape was re-identified and brought back to life. Today, Maran Wines transforms White Areni into a remarkable amber (orange) wine that blends Armenia’s 6,000-year-old winemaking heritage with cutting-edge science.

Produced in the prestigious Vayots Dzor region—a mountainous area known for its high-altitude vineyards and unique volcanic terroir—this amber wine reflects both the soul of Armenian soil and the innovative spirit of modern winemaking.

Winemaking & Style

Malahi is crafted using the ancient skin-contact method, where the juice remains in contact with the grape skins for an extended period. Unlike conventional white wines, this amber wine underwent six months of fermentation and maceration in traditional clay amphorae (karases). This process imparts:

  • A deep amber-orange hue,
  • Rich tannic structure rarely found in white wines,
  • Intense aromas and flavors layered with minerality and depth.

The result is a bold, textured wine that bridges the freshness of white grapes with the complexity of red wine styles.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Brilliant amber with golden-orange highlights, reminiscent of dried apricot and honeycomb.
  • Nose: Elegant and expressive, offering floral and herbal notes, ripe orchard fruit, and earthy undertones from the long skin contact.
  • Palate: Full-bodied, structured, and textural with flavors of ripe stone fruits, citrus peel, dried apricot, honey, and subtle spice. The extended maceration brings fine tannins and a layered mouthfeel.
  • Finish: Long and complex with dried fruit, nutty undertones, and a refreshing tart edge, leaving a lasting impression.

Food Pairing

The depth and character of Malahi Amber make it a versatile wine to pair with:

  • Meats & Poultry: Roasted chicken, lamb stews, duck, and pork tenderloin.
  • Cheeses: Aged cheeses like Pecorino, Parmigiano-Reggiano, or Armenian Lori cheese.
  • Vegetarian Dishes: Roasted root vegetables, mushroom-based dishes, and Mediterranean mezze.
  • Spiced Cuisine: Middle Eastern lamb kebabs, Indian curries, or Asian stir-fries with ginger and chili.
