Vine Cliff 2013 Private Stock 16 Rows Oakville Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
93 pts International Wine Report - This small production Cabernet Sauvignon is made with fruit from the first sixteen rows of vines planted in front of the Sweeney family’s hilltop home, this bottling represents the oldest and most mature fruit from their Oakville Estate. As the wine opens it begins with aromatics of black cherries, crème de cassis, black olive and anise with suggestions of coffee grounds. This leads to deep, profound flavors of mocha, roasted coffee, tar and blackberry preserves. Intense and having a gorgeous mineral streak, this is one which will certainly cellar beautifully for years to come. Although this is already exceedingly delicious, try to resist this fantastic wine for at least another year or two. Only about 200 cases made. (Best 2017-2030) - November, 2016 (OB)
92 pts Wine Enthusiast - Intensely earthy and dense, this is a rustic undertaking, tannic and bittersweet, with a powerful savory side, defined by black tar, tobacco and smoked meat. The finish takes a different turn, a true partnership between vanilla and chocolate.
The 2013 growing season began with low winter rainfall. The season continued dry and temperatures were warmer than normal resulting in early bud break and bloom. Drier soils in the spring helped slow grape canopy growth which resulted in lower cluster weight and smaller berry size which bodes well for wine quality. Every year we select our most exceptional lots from these low yield, high quality blocks to make the very limited Private Stock blend. Our 2013 Private Stock Cabernet final blend is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.
The aroma is a complex mix of cassis, blackberry, berry, plum, and earth. Aging in the finest French Bordeaux barrels produces a bouquet of cedar, anise, vanilla, and a hint of nutmeg and clove. Rich and luscious on the palate with balanced acidity and berry and cherry flavors that linger with supple tannin on the long smooth finish.
